SF6 Gas Management
Sulphur Hexafluoride or SF6 is an inert gas widely used in HV electrical equipment. Because of its outstanding electrical, physical, and chemical properties it enables significant benefits for the electrical supply network;
- SF6 Insulates 2.5 times better than air (N2), and
- Over 100 times better are quenching capability than air (N2), and
- Better heat dissipation than air.
Sf6 has excellent properties as both an arc quenching medium as well as insulator. 80% of HV equipment manufacture contains SF6. As quoted from a Cigre report “A combination of extraordinary electrical, physical, chemical and thermal properties make SF6 a unique and indispensable material in electric power equipment for which there is no functionally equivalent substitute.”
Although SF6 is excellent for electrical applications it does have a high global warming potential that may contribute to the man-made greenhouse effect. It is very important that SF6 is handled with care as to not release and gas to the atmosphere unnecessarily.
